The MKC Story.

The MultiKai Cooker was born from a simple but powerful idea: to create a modern outdoor cooker that could bring the flavours and experience of the traditional Māori ground hangi to your backyard — but it has evolved far beyond that.

Created by a New Zealand entrepreneur from his own home, MultiKai has grown into a world-renowned product, now manufactured at scale and enjoyed worldwide. With patents dating back to 1998 in New Zealand and Australia, and trademarks registered in New Zealand, Australia, the USA, and China, MultiKai is proudly Kiwi innovation on a global stage.

Traditional ground hangi uses Manuka wood as fuel, heated stones, and wet sacks that drip moisture onto the stones. The combination of heat, steam, and Manuka ash slowly cooks the food, infusing it with that signature smoky hangi flavour. After 3–4 hours, the wet sacks dry out, and the food is finished by the dryer heat, roasting it perfectly.

The MultiKai Cooker recreates this process with a modern twist: its BBQ hotplate acts like the heated stones, a gas burner provides the heat, and Manuka sawdust or tablets are used on the hotplate for authentic smoky flavour. Fresh or semi-frozen meat portions drip onto the hotplate, generating steam, and as the moisture reduces, the food is roasted to perfection — all in a fraction of the time.
